Soup – is it or is it not a meal? This is a debate as old as time, more perplexing than “to be or not to be,” more polarizing than pumpkin beer and candy corn combined. Can hot liquid, regardless of what it contains, stand up as a main dish? This hot-button issue was even the focus of a classic Seinfeld episode - Jerry owes Kenny Bania a meal (in exchange for a free Armani suit), but Kenny orders the soup and tells Jerry he’ll take the meal later.
I did not like vegetables as a kid. I wasn’t crazy picky (wasn’t allowed to be) but I definitely was not one of those children that was gung-ho over a plate of broccoli. But for some reason, I loved hearts of palm – and my mom quickly figured out that if she threw some in a salad, I’d easily put away whatever else was there. I love it just as much now as I did then, and while I often throw together a salad for a quick dinner, I almost never do it if I don’t have hearts of palm around.
Yesterday on my way to work, an SUV with the license plate “LIV SLO” blew by me on the right going about 85 mph. In a 50 mph zone.
Memo to Alanis Morrissette: that is ironic. Rain on your wedding day and traffic jams when you’re already late? Those things just suck (and yes, the lack of actual irony in that song has bothered me since I was a teenager).
And another memo to Mister LIV SLO: we’re all busy – always. We have work, and families, and social lives when we can, and daily annoyances that have to be squeezed in around those things. So as nice as it is to direct everyone to LIV SLO via your license plate, if you can’t even do it yourself, you may want to head to the DMV and swap that puppy out for a new plate. I would suggest “LIV FAST.” Or maybe “DIE HARD.”
I went on a bit of a healthy kick over the weekend – after making four batches of cupcakes in three days the week prior, I definitely needed it (not that I gorge on the cupcakes I make, but one does have to taste test, you know?). And in a fit of heat-induced amnesia, I accidentally bought a new package of kumatos every.single.time I went to Trader Joe’s last week (four packages, for the record). Luckily, when you’re craving healthy food, a glut of tomatoes isn’t a bad thing to have around.
