Vegetarian Hot Dogs

The last time I ate a hot dog was upwards of five years ago, on a boiling summer day, at a baseball game. Nothing sounded better than a hot dog and a cold beer, and boy, did they both hit the spot. There’s no denying that, whatever’s in hot dogs (shudder), they taste pretty darn good.

Since then, I think I’ve tried every vegetarian faux-hot dog on the market, and I have never been impressed. Not only are they just as processed as regular hot dogs (albeit without the objectionable animal products), but they just don’t taste very good. They tend to be rubbery and limp and flavorless – not something you want to sink your teeth into at a ballgame, or a barbecue, or anytime at all.

Movie Monday: Oven-Fried Green Tomatoes

Today I’m introducing a new and extremely exciting (okay, maybe just new) feature to the blog – Movie Monday. Each week’s Movie Monday post will feature a recipe inspired by (or directly lifted from) a movie, and probably a whole bunch of my irrelevant commentary about both food and movies. I’m doing this first and foremost because I’ve had a list going for at least a year of recipes or food ideas I’ve gotten from movies, but also because I am straight-up obsessed with themed food. Being a DC-area person, this usually ends up heading in a political direction (ask anyone who knows me about the debate night and election menus from 2008), but let’s face it – movies are much more fun than politics, and maybe slightly less polarizing.

Blueberry Muffins

I love cupcakes. I live for cupcakes. Truly, they’ve become kind of my calling card and I never run out of ways to keep them fun to make.

That said, I don’t have a dishwasher, my sweet tooth isn’t really all that intense, and I’m really, really busy with regular life most of the time. So what’s a cupcake lover who’s short on time, hates washing dishes, and is trying to cut back on desserts to do?

Raspberry White Chocolate Blondies

I went a little crazy at the farmer’s market last weekend. I couldn’t help it. There’s something about the hustle and bustle, the fresh produce in every direction, my bank’s ATM right across the street…things happen. We’ll call it magic, lest my lack of impulse control be revealed.

Berries, cherries, and other summer fruits are starting to come into season, and they are impossible to resist. When I saw the juicy, plump raspberries nestled in their blue cardboard cartons, it was all over. They were coming home with me, and they were going to become some ridiculous dessert or another. I’d seen these white chocolate strawberry blondies over at Love & Olive Oil, and I figured raspberries would work just as well – they didn’t disappoint. Although raspberries are a bit less sturdy than strawberries, their flavor is a welcome addition to these blondies. Dense and not overly sweet, these are perfect for pretty much any occasion (or lack of occasion – they were just a Sunday afternoon lark for me). Make them with whatever berry you pick up this weekend at the market – I bet cherries or blueberries would be great in these, too.[click for recipe and more]

Peanut Butter Swirl Brownies

Eggs and toast. Cake and ice cream. Peanut butter and chocolate. There are those perfect combinations of foods that just go together in some inexplicable way, and peanut butter and chocolate is the textbook definition of that eye-rollingly delicious food marriage. Reese’s peanut butter cups, buckeyes, cookies, fudge – the possibilities are endless, and I can never resist the combination.
